UTM is frequently used to monitor metal thickness in industrial settings. NDT Technicians equipped with portable UTM equipment and probes can access steel plating in sides, tanks, decks and the superstructure of ships. They can read the steel's thickness by simply touching it with the measurement head (transducer) of the UTM device.
To ensure effective contact, any visible corrosion scale is removed first and then petroleum jelly or similar substance is applied before pressing the probe against metal. These testing methods are used to inspect metal to determine quality and safety without destroying or compromising its integrity. It has now become a requirement of many Classification societies.
Classification societies have detailed requirements for the thickness measurement of hull structures, which depend greatly on the vessel's type, age and length. The International Association of Classification Socities (IACS) has a set of guidelines which sets out such requirements for all its members. The allowable thresholds of thickness will depend upon the specific construction rules of each Classification society. Each society will also stipulate their own requirements for the number of operators required for UTM surveys.
The UTM operators need to be at least Level II certified according to the requirements of SNT-TC-1A (or similar standard). The company undertaking the UTM survey must be approved by the Classification society to which the vessel is registered.. The Classification society will review the documented procedures of the UTM survey provider as well as conducting an audit to to issue an approval certificate. All equipment used by the UTM survey provider needs to be approved by the appropriate Classification society.
